SETUP

Let’s take a look at the league’s set up and get to know more about Bangladesh Premier League. The Twenty20 Bangladesh Premier League starts with auctions of players. From the name itself, it means that players can acquire another player. There is a specific timeframe wherein players can still be signed up for another team. There is a possibility of trading players. It is also a perfect opportunity for unattached players to sign up for a specific team. A total of 18 players consists of each team with eight (8) maximum international players, and five of them should play in one match.

The games played in the first round follow a round-robin format. Every team plays against each other, one game is played at home and the other is played away from home. The top four strong teams will advance to the knockout semi-final round. The winning team advances to the final.

HISTORY

It was in February of 2012 when they launch the first Bangladesh Premier League. The league spent a huge amount of money and time on the league with the hope that it would get off to a great start. A total of 33 games were scheduled, but they had to divide between six teams. The matches were played at two stadiums in Dhaka (BPL’s headquarters) and Chittagong.

SEASONS

A total of three seasons of the Bangladesh Premier League were recorded as of late 2015. The Dhaka Gladiators was the winner of the first BPL season in 2012. It went neck to neck with the Barisal Burners, but it emerged victorious and defeated the Barisal Burners. It was an unexpected win for the Dhaka Gladiators considering that it was only in the third spot during the round robin. What’s even more surprising is that the top two cricket teams, Khulna Royal Bengals and Dumont Rajshahi, didn’t make it after the semi-finals.

The Dhaka Gladiators remained to be victorious. During the group stage, Dhaka Gladiators successfully landed at the top spot. It defeated Sylhet Royals in the semi-finals. In the finals, it went neck-to-neck with the Chittagong Kings, and emerged victorious. The Bangladesh Premier League was doing really well until 2014 when it struggled financially, putting the league on hold for that year.

In 2015, the league returned but this time with many changes, such as new franchises and a new format. So the new breed of franchises takes over because the previous years’ franchises were retired. However, there’s a catch – they are the same old teams but this time with new branding. Dhaka Gladiators is changed to Dhaka Dynamites.

SPONSORS AND BROADCASTERS

The Bangladesh Premier League is televised in many countries, especially in countries where cricket is a well-known sport, such as Ireland and the United Kingdom.
